Iron Cookware Seasoning
Low-tox alternative to using teflon cookware
Ideal for cast iron or wrought iron cookware
What is seasoning?
Many of the pots and pans you already have at home are made using toxic acids,
which is why we've made the switch to iron cookware - the key is maintenance, and here's how we do it.
watch the video to learn more about iron seasoning.
What you’ll need:
- Cast iron or wrought iron cookware
- A natural iron seasoning bar
- Lint free cloth or paper towel
Oven Seasoning
Season your iron cookware in an oven every now and then to maintain its rust resistance.
How to do it
watch the video below!
1. Heat the pan in a low oven about 90-120 degrees Celsius for 10-15 mins.
2. Remove the pan from the oven. smear the inside with a seasoning bar and wipe all over with your cloth, wipe the sides and handles making sure there is an even coating.
Now turn the pan over, smear a small amount of the seasoning bar and wipe the base and sides so that the whole pan has been oiled. This needs to look like you’ve not added oil at all by the time you’ve finished, so make sure it’s a thin, even coat.
3. place the pan back into the oven upside down preferably on high heat 250 degrees celcius for 1.5-2 hours.
4. Leave in oven to cool for an hour or overnight.
Stove Top Seasoning
Season your iron cookware on a stove top regularly to build its non-stick surface.
How to do it
watch the video below!
1. Over low heat on the stove top, gradually heat the pan.
2. Once the pan is hot, smear a small amount of the seasoning bar in the pan.
3. On low heat, with your cloth, wipe the iron seasoning bar around the pan base and sides. The pan should be smoking. Continue wiping so there’s no obvious signs of oil and an even coverage for about 30 seconds.
4. Remove the pan from heat, let it cool and continue the steps 2-3 times or until you are happy with your naturally built non-stick surface.
Both Oven seasoning and Stove Top seasoning are great natural ways to get the most out of your iron cookware.
So, whether you’re new to cooking or you’re a seasoned pro - there’s no excuse not to have the best kept pans around!
